CARB, under the Clean Air Act, works to reduce smog forming and toxic pollutants from mobile sources, with heavy-duty diesel trucks over 14,000 pounds being a major contributor to NOx and PM 2.5 emissions. Despite decades of regulations, incentives, and cleaner technology like particulate filters and catalytic reduction systems, malfunctioning emission controls can still cause high pollution.
The Clean Truck Check program addresses this by requiring better emissions testing, roadside monitoring, regular reporting, and compliance checks for freight and port operators. Once fully in place, it’s expected to cut over 81 tons of NOx and 0.7 tons of PM emissions per day by 2037, preventing more than 7,500 premature deaths.
